2022: Top Design Trends

In this new year, there is a common thread throughout all things design. Zen in all forms is very “in” and bringing the outside-in is the way forward, we believe.

With all that the world has faced on so many levels, it is evident that most are craving surrounding themselves with a grounding and anchoring space. Not to mention, with so much time spent inside the home & many working from home – our spaces come with loaded needs.

Functionality, coziness, and movement are rising in importance. There is additionally a desire for more personal touch & making a space your own – not necessarily as rigid and “in alignment” with a specific design form and structure. It is more about intuition & how a space breathes for the particular individual or family.

To break things down, we’ve gathered the top design trends for 2022 :

Truly in all forms – the more grounding, the better. This includes every “sense” of the word – quite literally. From smell & texture, to fabric & color palettes – there is a continual desire for peace & calm in the home.

In color palette – there is a trend for greens, both earthly & jewel-toned. Not surprisingly, green is a color that is associated with revitalization and growth. Terra-cotta & oranges are also trending, bringing warmth & coziness. These colors offer a sense of hope & optimism. & Last but not least – neutrals, especially within an earthy color palette, create that perfect nest where you can both function + recoup.

What we are saying is – color matters. It is scientifically proven to help one’s mindset, happiness, & productivity.

Both in furniture & room setup, the need for a space to function for the individual or family unit is more important than ever. This includes things such as, coffee tables that rise up to become dining tables, Murphy beds (think : convertible furniture), & school rooms that share space with the dining room.

If you are short on space, offices can be set up in a cozy nook, or perhaps under the stairs, but share space with the living room – we’ve seen it all. Multi-functionality is the new open concept setup. Even hidden storage provides a tidy look, but gives the needed organizational aspect.

With so much time spent indoors and the desire for seamless transitions, we are seeing lots of green in the form of plants, as well. Lush plants, homegrown plant propagating, lemon trees, and all the nature-inspired things. Not only do plants provide a soothing atmosphere, but they purify the air & boost your mood.

Natural materials are a priority as well, in the form of wood flooring, archways, accent pieces, & furniture, whether reclaimed or raw. Mirrors that reflect the natural light and any way to bring all the sunshine indoors, we are all about. Any elements that open up the space & give the feeling of deep breaths and possibilities (think : rattan, bamboo, & the like). Big windows are a big hit too – letting nature have its way into your interior frame.

Like we said – it’s all about the senses. It’s not just about what the eye can see, but we are needing a sense of comfort. We want our environment to provide a haven and place of restoration. Comfort colors, comfort fabrics & textures are important.

In the form of fabric and texture – the more luxurious, the better. But, durability matters too. This includes velvet, sheepskin, linen, & cotton. We recommend choosing some of these heavier fabrics in smaller pieces, such as blankets, throw pillows, etc, as it is easier to switch out seasonally.

Personal touch is everything. What works for one may not work for another. Within a style framework, lines are being blurred & there is much more focus on movement, purposeful color, & whatever brings life & uniqueness to the space-owner.

The forms we are seeing this most are in bold wallpaper, murals, and even some retro influence. Moroccan patterns, both in textiles & fabric, are bringing inspiration & interest, as well as florals.

Out with the harsh lines & in with the curved lines. This is true for furniture, & even doors & archways. Curvy elements create an elegant feel. It gives way for invitation and a casual atmosphere. We all want a space where we can let our guard down and put our feet up.

Even in styled pieces – we are seeing lots of mid-century (think : ceramic vases, candlestick holders, & wall hangings). This movement holds a high-aesthetic value, as well. These rounded & curvy pieces are seen in patterns & prints, such as pillow covers, tea towels, & blankets for accent. This gives an organic, soothing feel vs. the rigid feeling of the use of only symmetry.

Sustainability efforts are on the rise. Fabrics – recycled, organic, & sustainable – we say yes & more yes. If it’s better for the planet, we can’t argue with that. Not only that, but if it’s better for people and will honor the efforts of the whole sourcing & creating process – this a must. More than perhaps in the past, it seems that we all want to do better and be intentional in what we choose to purchase and support.

Linen, cotton, recycled plastic, jute, cork, & just as we mentioned above, rattan, bamboo, & others are prevalent. We are all going back to baseline, & we hope this one sticks for good, as we see this trend having a far-reaching positive outcome for generations to come.

Yes, we are talking about minimalism. Out with the unnecessary and in with purpose & efficiency. Keep what sparks joy (refer to Marie Kondo) and has function. De-cluttering, re-organizing, & donating what isn’t needed is here for the foreseeable future. We all need more de-stressing to the max & creating spaces that will keep the mind free of chaos.

There is an increasing trend for creating upwards interest. Whether taking the opportunity for a color contrast to add depth or using raw materials to create a paneled look, we love this creative take vs. a bare ceiling approach.

Creating this upwards interest adds character & a custom-feel to your home. And no matter your square footage, giving a space this touch will send your eyes up and provide openness.

We hope this helps bring a little inspiration & a lot more centered-ness to your space as you navigate the building, designing, & styling of your home.
